Yep, I’m Still Here
I began writing this blog in 2020 as a bit of a COVID hobby. The idea of writing about my amputation had been bouncing around in my head for a few years, but I didn’t really know where or how to start.
To be honest, I wasn’t even entirely sure whether it was something I actually wanted to do, rather than something I should do because of all the people telling me that it would be a good idea.
Then, one day, I came across the Facebook post of a friend I had met whilst doing musicals. She had published her own blog post and I still remember how engaging and interesting it was at the time. Not just what was being written about, but also the way it was written.
That inspired me to finally take the plunge and share my first post, “Gotta Start Somewhere”. (I know, my creativity is mind blowing).
As mentioned above, this started out as a COVID project and I expected to keep at it for a few months, maybe a year at the most.
So, to be here, writing a post for my fifth anniversary (even with a long stint of not posting last year), is surprising, but also feels quite special. I might not be uploading new content as regularly as I was in those first few years, but the blog is alive and well.
What’s Been Going On?
I mentioned that I took a long break over the last year and I have actually already shared a post that goes into a little bit of why the blog was quiet for that length of time.
Rather than go over it all again here, I will add a link to that post at the end of this one.
Also, while preparing to write this, I looked back over the post I shared for my three year anniversary and realised that I had talked about recording all of my older posts and turning them into a podcast. That obviously hasn’t materialised as of yet and again, it’s mainly due to the same reasons that have prevented me from writing much over the last few years.
I would love to get that done some day and perhaps this is the year but as of right now, it isn’t something that I would say is “coming soon”.
What’s Next For The Blog?
Who knows?
Well… I do. At least, I’m hoping so.
I recently ended the “My Story: Before Amputation” series of posts because they had finally caught up with the “Post Amputation” series. (Don’t you love it when a prequel ties directly into the main story?)
With one type of post coming to an end, it would be rude to not at least try and replace it with something else.
Over the last few years, I have been fortunate enough to be able to visit a number of different places. Something that needs to be accounted for on every one of these trips is my disability and obviously, being someone who writes a blog, there was really no option for me other than to find a way to turn this into content.
I’m currently putting together the first in a series of posts about my travels and how being an amputee affects… everything.
There is also one other project I have planned but considering how the whole “I’m making a podcast” thing went last time, I’ll keep that one close to my chest for now.
A Quick Look Back
This blog has, at its core, always been a vehicle for me to share my story and experiences in a far more detailed way than any single conversation could ever hope to cover.
Whether it is a story worth your time is something that only you as an individual can decide but, for me, writing it all out here has been quite a cathartic experience.
In the process of looking back over what can only be described as a fairly traumatic time in my life, both good and bad feelings have bubbled. But, overall, it has been a positive undertaking.
After all, writing this has led to a number of wonderful interactions with other people, some with similar disabilities, some with completely different ones and a great many with none at all.
Knowing that there are folks out there who have read my blog and gotten something positive out of it is an incredible feeling and these interactions are the reason that I was so keen to start back up again after the long break.
And with all of that being the case, there is only one more thing left to say in this post…
Thank You
Yes, you, reading this.
If this is the first post you’ve ever seen on my blog, thank you for clicking on the random link that brought you here and I hope that you find more to interest you amongst the many other posts.
If you have been here for a longer time, thank you for keeping up with my ramblings over last (insert length of time here).
And if you have been reading from the beginning, well then, what can I say. Five years is a long time to keep up with a blog like this, especially when I’ve taken a couple of not-insignificant breaks.
Thank you so much for sticking with me.
Stay safe out there folks and never stop being excellent to each other.
